We grew up in the Ain region and have been friends since we first met in secondary school in Pont D’Ain. As teenagers, it didn’t take long before we began walking around and discovering the places and landscapes of our childhood. As soon as we passed our driving licence and got our first cars, our expeditions started to intensify and our playground became larger. Revermont, Bugey, Haut-Bugey, Dombes, Bresse and Cotière are the six localities in the Ain region that fuelled our first photographic expeditions. In 2014, we decided to rename our playground Secteur Lambda (“ordinary sector”). The Secteur Lambda is an area of photographic exploration. Stuck between six natural regions, its particularities are mainly linked to its topography and the various industries that developed here. Its undefinable plurality – belonging to every region and therefore none of them – is what makes this area interesting. Measuring a mere 60 km in distance as the crow flies and with an altitude of up to 1,112 m at the pass of La Rochette, its valleys follow the river Ain, the Albarine and the former N75 national road. It starts in the city of Bourg-en-Bresse in the north and heads towards Lyon in the south. Its boundaries are the ice pits in Nantua, the sanatoriums in Hauteville, the silk factories in Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey and finally, the industrial, nuclear and military areas of the Plaine de l’Ain. It is important for us to make a contribution, no matter how small, to help decipher and describe this sector as well as capture the way it is changing.
